Ichthyosaurs were large marine reptiles which resembled dolphins and which dominated the Jurassic seas throughout the world.   They were first discovered in Lyme Regis at the beginning of the 19th century by Mary Anning herself, a self-taught, ordinary woman, who has since earned the distinction of being the ‘Mother of Paleontology’.

The size of this vertebrae from the Upper Jurassic 140m years ago,  suggests it was from an animal which was over 20ft long!  The bone was dredged from the sea floor off Portland in Dorset, UK.  Without the demand  created by interest in Fossils, this bone would no doubt have gone back to lie on the sea bed and eventually worn away.   A lovely piece to add interest to any room and keep the spirit of this gigantic Ichthyosaur alive forever.   Labelled and mounted on a stand hand-made from wood and metal, a fascinating and affordable treat for yourself, family or friend and a great way to remember Mary Anning or a fun holiday on the Dorset Jurassic Coast!
